Can this man do no wrong? September 4, 2010 Dr Chris Shields 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
When I first heard the concept behind this album I was a bit worried. I'm a huge Sting fan and wasn't sure that his style of music would suit the philharmonic treatment. I was wrong! This is fast becoming one of my all time favourite Sting albums. The tracks are re-worked to provide a new listening experience, but are also close enough to the orginals so I can sing along! Sting's more mature voice also brings a new quality to the songs and hints at a vulnerability which may not have been present during the orginal recordings. Particularly in tracks such as 'The Pirate's Bride'. This is a necessary purchase for any Sting fan.
Sting Gone Classical July 18, 2010 SheilaFromBonnieScotland (Englandshire) 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
When a track from this album was introduced on Radio 2, I couldn't imagine Sting and a classical orchestra working. I was pleasantly surprised when it did! Sting's tracks have been with us for many years, but try this one as a refreshing change.

I didn't think it possible to fall any more in love with some of my favourite of his songs but the intelligent and subtle arrangements have taken my breath away. It's possible to listen to each of these tracks a dozen times and find different shades and emphases and hear how well suited the choice of instruments and musicians' techniques are to the particular songs. It must have been a huge challenge choosing only 12 to develop! Although in my view he has never been in better voice, the composer has modestly allowed the orchestral styles to set the tone and colour and consequently many of his lyrics to find a fresh meaning. 'Roxeanne' and 'I Burn For You' for example, suddenly sound like songs that originated as classical pieces which have subsequently had contemporary words added. I immediately imaginined what another twenty of his songs would sound like given the same treatment. Too much to hope for I suppose.

I agree with the comments about new material being long overdue , sting has given us some great performances and music over the years , i understand from a recent interview on tv this work is a one off project to benefit the royal philarmonic orchestra , sting lends his name, songs and has the priviliage of working with this fine orchestra , sting does take risks which is why his music is so good , obviously not everything he does will work , his musical output is tremendous and he does delve back into his back catalogue often and has come up with some quirky stuff over the last few years , i suppose all artists go through periods of writers block its apparent with all great musicians , first few albums inspired , years down the line mediocre to dreadful , i suspect the royalties and fame take the initial hunger away but great songs will always stand the test of time and i suppose it comes down to personal taste but i have listened to this cd and just focusing on the music and performance must say find it very enjoyable , the songs sound fresh some with guest female backing vocals , outstanding , and not all songs are well known over played hits , the orchestra is brilliant too , sting has given us rock , jazz , classical arrangements of his hits over the years , he's proved he's an accomplished musician , charasmatic performer , but some new material of simple decent tunes is long overdue , please no more hit packages .
