Another stellar piece from Piggyback March 13, 2010 marv101 (UK) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
After buying (and reviewing) the collector's edition of the Final Fantasy XII Piggyback guide book, I decided I'd invest in in the collector's edition guide for Final Fantasy XIII. This is an example of another stellar guide brought to you by Piggyback. Similar to the guide for XII reflecting the ancient times of XII, this guide reflects the modern characteristics of the world of cocoon in XIII, with an elegant, simple design cover that any FF fan from the PAL region should be familiar with. It's nice to see Piggyback pay tribute to traditions even though Square-Enix has strayed far far away from traditions in this game.
The actual content is of course as you'd expect from Piggyback. It's got everything you could ever possibly want to know, which is very helpful considering the lack of explanation in the game about certain areas, especially weapon/accessory upgrades. This guide easily breaks it down for you, telling you when they recommend you start upgrading, where to find the exact pieces, and the benefits of upgrading which weapon, seeing as you can get the "ultimate" weapons from all the weapons found in the game.
What I like most about this guide is the story recall. With the nature of the game trying to resemble first-person-shooters in terms of delving you right in the line of fire going from battle to battle, without much time to digest exactly what is happening. In the game, you playback memories of the past 13 days, but not in order, which can make things confusing. Piggyback nicely gives you the synopsis from each day as well as slightly analysing the events, making things easier to digest and fully understand the story.
As usual, there is artwork galore in the guide, making it an elegant addition to any FF fan.
My only tidbits is the fact there is no page holder like there was in the FFXII collector's guide. Also, my pages seem to have crimpled as though they've become moist, even after just a couple of hours of use. Hopefully they'll flatten back out, but this isn't a noticeable problem when reading the guide - just when it's shut, so it won't take away any enjoyment from browsing the guide.

Generally I steer clear of videogame strategy guides, but for a big RPG it can be very tempting to have something that explains all the mechanics of levelling etc. If that's all you need, you can probably get a badly-printed tips book with a magazine ... this, however, is so much more.
Piggyback has a reputation for putting together exemplary guides - their guide to FFXII was already superb - and this is no exception. There's a walkthrough, which you probably don't need, but despite the fact that the maps actually boil down in most cases to showing you how to walk from A to B down a straight line they are lovingly integrated into the page, with lots of high-quality artwork and details that enable you to pick up every last treasure chest.
There are, of course, plenty of spreadsheets to get tucked into for the devoted RPG fan, and a full bestiary, and you are never going to feel that there is any data that you might need that is not readily at hand. Once you've finished the game, however, the book will continue to serve as an impressive piece of memorabilia thanks to its high quality of production and elegant design.
I bought this along with the collectors' edition of the game and here's the thing: when you compare what you get for the extra money from Square Enix, and what you get for the same money (or less) from Piggyback, it is clear that this guide is fantastic value for money. This isn't just a guide for the stat-crazed; it's the best souvenir you can get for this generation of Final Fantasy.
Almost essential? May 12, 2010 D. Stothard (Sheffield, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Even as a veteran of the FF series I found myself with this book almost constantly open, especially post-game when it comes into it's own as a Hunt or Upgrade reference. Content does seem a little thin, it's more of a database than a good read, but I think that's more down to the games own limitations.
Keep Collecting March 10, 2010 Mr. S. Clough (Bradford, West Yorkshire) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I've got this because of its value it will add to my collection of Final Fantasy Games.
Since this is the collectors edition, there will be a limited number of these.
As a guide goes, you get all your information and tips on boss battles etc...
I tend to only use the guide when I'm stuck or to read after completing the game.
Even if you never use this guide, if you are a Collector of Final Fantasy, then this will only add value to your collection (More so if its not removed from its seal)
