Bite me!................ May 7, 2009 Me read 143 out of 162 found this review helpful
This is YA fiction and I'm not even close to the target audience. It's been a lot of years since I belonged in the 'teen' category BUT... despite that, I loved this book! I think it might be because the 17 year old that I once was is still fresh in my mind, and if I squint when I look in the mirror I can still see her (she just got better looking over the last couple of decades *grin*).
A five star book for me is one that I have to tear myself away from and this has to be one of the better 5 star books I've read recently. I could not put it down, regardless of whether I fit in the target deomographic or not. I have no idea why I was so enamoured with this particular story but it just grabbed me, literally from the first chapter. It has it's flaws, and at times those flaws tried to pull me away from the pages while I wrestled with my beliefs but never did I feel like I couldn't go on. I'm actually mystified why this is such a great book, I wish I could put my finger on it but it escapes me. I am fond of a bit of vampire lit, it's true, but this goes beyond that....I think. I can't say the writing is superlative so it's not that.....but what is it? I wish I knew. Answers on a postcard, please.
Bella is a complete feminists' nightmare and I can see why that would put a lot of people off of her, but at 17 love is blind so I'm willing to forgive Bella on that score. Edward is so uber male that he fairly reeks testosterone and again, that may grate on some readers but lets put things in perspective, he's the ultimate predator and has had nearly a century of dominating his prey so on that score I'm willing to forgive him his overly masculine nature for now, this nurture/love thing is new for him too.....he'll get it right eventually I expect.
Ultimitely, lets not forget that this is a tale of vampire love which is aimed at teens/young adults and the usual complexities and concerns that come with real life won't apply here. I for one am glad to slip into Bella and Edward's world and remember what it was to be young and in the throes of first love. If you have an imagination and are willing to suspend your disbelief then you might enjoy this story. It's an enjoyable bit of fulff to while away a few hours/days but if your usual reading material tends to be the classics and nothing more, then you probably will feel the need to return here with you own 1 or 2 star review.
I have books 2, 3 and 4 lined up here, ready to devour and if they go as quickly as Twilight then I'll have completed all 4 in about 3 more days. I want to tell everyone to read this as I loved it so much, but I realise that everyone has different tastes so all I can recommend is that you read the reviews and make your own mind up from there.
Twilight August 15, 2009 Mrs. S. Burrows (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Not being much of a vampire story lover I was sceptical at best about this book, even after having seen the movie (which I must say was pretty good), I still felt a little reticent about the book.
I thought at best it would be a quick holiday read, how wrong could I have been.
The Twilight saga without a doubt has made it to my top 5 of books ever read. I am stilling reeling at how much I loved this book and subsequently the next 3 novels from the same group.
I cannot recommend them enough.
Stephenie Meyer manages to almost plant the feelings Edward and Bella have for each other into your own heart. I managed to read all four books in 8 days, then went on to buy the entire audio book collection for this too.
In my 38 years of life I have never fallen in love with a book enough to read it and then listen to the audio version of it twice as well.
This book has quite literally planted itself into my heart and it will take something really special to even come close to toppling it.
Even if you have watched the movie, I would recommend reading the book as well.
I'm addicted!!!! November 26, 2009 Laurence Baillie (Australie) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What can I say... I resisted buying this book until now. I thought it was one of those teenage chick flick and that I wouldn't like it. Then my Mum (who is 64!!!) told me how great it was and gave me the first book as a gift. I devoured it and read it in one day and I'm totally hooked now. I've ordered the first DVD and will see the new film straight after and I've also ordered the two other books. I really don't fit in the demographics of the targeted audience (by about 20 years) but I love it. Highly recommended but beware, you will get addicted too...
Amazing December 7, 2005 Claire (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Twilight. It's simply a spectacular novel. Brilliant. I loved every bit of it: romance, suspense, and the whole supernatural ordeal. This is a vampire book for people who don't like vampires. I didn't know what to expect when I was handed this book, but it is now one of my favorites of all time. To tell you anything about Twilight plotwise wouldn't be fair. You must go out and buy a copy pronto.I reccommend if to any teenager or adult alike, maybe girls would better appreciate it though. I LOVED IT. From the wonderful setting, to the complex characters, to the beautiful descriptions. It's mostly simple writing, but amazing all the same. READ IT
almost too good to be true August 26, 2007 Hanna (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I absolutely loved reading this book. I've always been drawn to books about vampires and other mythical creatures so this seemed like a good choice when I ventured into my local book shop.
Thinking it would just be a cheesy romance with traditional vampires, I sat down to read it later that night and I was in for a shock!
It was amazing! I loved how real all of the characters and situations were and how the traditional aspects of vampires were given a new spin.
The story line was well-thought out and never boring. I just couldn't put it down (well at least not until it was some stupid hour in the morning and I had school the next day).
Everything about this book was and is enthralling! Stephanie Meyers is now definately one of my favourite authors and I hope that some day I will be able to write even half as brilliantly as her.
