Product Description Janek Mitter stumbles into his bathroom one morning after a night of heavy drinking, to find his beautiful young wife, Eva, floating dead in the bath. An amazing debut October 25, 2009 emma who reads a lot (London) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This was Hakan Nesser's debut novel, which came out in Sweden in the early 1990s. We are just beginning to get his wonderful Inspector Van Veeteren books translated into English, but reading this very first in the series I was amazed at how well drawn the characters are, especially the dour Inspector; "He's big, his face is purple and he swears," as one of his interviewees puts it.
The plot is rather simple in some ways, but unfolds with satisfying pace. Highly influenced by other Swedish writers, especially Sjowall and Wahloo, there is a large cast of policemen and lots of stuff about contemporary Swedish society. The story is also told in compact little scenes like S&W, which I love as little time is wasted on 'scene-setting'.
In fact my only complaint is that the publishers did that annoying thing of putting the first chapter of the next book at the end, which means that you think you have longer to go in the novel than you realise! Argh.
Very, very enjoyable, especially when you know there are several more to come in the series!
Immensely enjoyable May 18, 2009 D. P. Mankin (Ceredigion, Wales) 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
Hakan Nesser's novels are a real pleasure to read. His writing is crisp and his style entertaining, and also underpinned by a degree of dry humour and quirkiness that colours the personality of the central character. He has a deft touch and his plots draw you in. I was looking forward to this novel and I wasn't disappointed. I won't go into the plot but leave you to enjoy the unfolding story for yourself. The story is told in under 300 pages and therefore doesn't suffer from the padding found in the novels of some better known crime novelists.
another detective Van Veeteran mystery story June 13, 2010 Victor Nettle (st louis mo usa) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you like the way Van Veeteran pieces all the clues together until he has enough information to solve the mystery, you will love this book
A cracking read July 28, 2010 Telboy (Holywood, Co Down, UK) It has taken me a while to get round to reading this as I have been immersing myself in a lot of Scandinavian crime fiction lately - my bookshelves are bulging with Camilia Lackberg, Jo Nesbo, Johann Theorin, Stieg Larsson and many, many others. But reading "The Mind's Eye" has only made me want to read more from Hakan Nesser, as this is a great police procedural, well up there with the best of the genre. The writing is crisp and sparse, reflective of the chilly, bleak setting. The pacing is excellent, the plot moving along at a brisk pace, but Nesser does not let the pacing prevent him from fleshing out his characters or letting them indulge in their reflective moments. The characters, especially Chief Inspector Van Veeteren, are well drawn and 3-dimensional enough to be very interesting. My only tiny criticism would be that the character of the hang-dog detective with family/relationship problems is a slightly clichéd one, but Nesser just about pulls it off. The story (a variation of the locked-door mystery) is interesting and intriguing and certainly kept this reader glued to the page. Some of the dialogue, particularly in the courtroom scenes, is excellent, fairly crackling with emotion. All in all, this is a well-written and well-plotted police procedural, with some very interesting characters and some nice twists. Definitely recommended.
The Mind's Eye December 22, 2009 Mrs. D. Drennan (Rutland, UK) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I do wish Nesser wouldn'd kill off the innocent so early in the book, but that seems to be his style and his chief inspector VV is on a par with Wallander, but chewing on toothpicks can't be good for his teeth! Another enjoyable Van Veerdren story.
