Winning formula September 25, 2009 Faithful (U. K.) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Just loved this book.
Low really seems to have hit a confident stride in his writing - the story flows well, with clear improvements particularly in dialogue. For me this is what raised this book a little higher than the first two. It is much funier, with laugh out loud moments comming regularly as a result of the fireside banter that is a constant vein through the book.
I dont think either book 2 or 3 have been as excitingly plotted as the first book, and this one, for me, felt a little flatter at the end, but it didn't matter, because in this effort Low has crafted characters that i really care about, with enough humour and bone-crunching action to keep me hooked. (Though no more Steppe wandering in the next one, please; there is only so much trudging through snow and ice that one can take!).
Can't wait for the next one.
The best yet, i am thinking. October 24, 2009 Jamie.W (Leeds) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
At last! Finaly an adventure for the Oathsworn which involves the snowy landscape of the North. This book, for me, has the best storyline and is generaly the most well written. you dont loose track of who's who and you dont find yourself realising that you have no idea what's going on.
If you have read the others then you are sure to love this. If you havent, why not?
The Oathsworn ride again April 12, 2009 Gareth Wilson 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you've followed the previous exploits of the Oathsworn by Rob Low then you know that this is going to be a crucial tale as we return to the Sea of Grass and the burial mound of the ancient warrior. Forced by circumstances beyond their control it seems the Norns weave the fates of this band of warriors to be haunted by their exploits. What makes this a series worth the reading however is the practical archaeology that appears within the books garnered from long nights of experience by the author (who if you haven't seen the article yet has written a piece on why he likes to be a Viking in this very issue.) Its engaging, its addictive and above all you really want a conclusion for this band of warriors worthy of the runes. All this and more appear within the hallowed pages and its with great sadness that this portion of the life of Orm Bearslayer and his crew passes into the pages of history. I'll look forward to seeing what Rob returns with for his next series.
A cracking old Viking Saga! August 29, 2009 K. D. Maynard (UK) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I'm giving this book 5 stars because of the excellent way it portrays the harsh, brutal and doomed exsistance of life in the 10th Century. Robert Low brilliantly evokes the real sense of the comradship that these raiders must have shared and highlight's the importance of an oath taken in these times compared with the somewhat wishy washy way we live today. The first chapter made me feel physically sick which no book has ever done before! It is as he says himself a tale to be told around a fire and i love the way that his style of writing and use of language fits with my own imagined image of Orm Bear Slayer re-telling the story of his life. A brilliant read!
Best viking fiction since Bengtsson's The Long Ships June 1, 2009 Morag O'donoghue 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
A great follow up to The Whale Road and The Wolf Sea - as ever, full of great characters (my only complaint is that Mr Low keeps killing so many of them off - probably more realistic that way, I know, but I'm a big softy who would happily sacrifice realism for a lower mortality rate!)
Better than Cornwell - I'd recommend these books to anyone who likes well written historical fiction.
